PhD Dissertation Proposal and Defense Guidelines. February 2017. As part of the requirements for completing a PhD degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, students must write and defend a dissertation research proposal. There are two main objectives in writing the dissertation proposal: 1) articulate the student’s research plan.

The Dissertation Research Proposal Defense shall consist of a written document and a presentation to the Student’s Supervisory Committee of its contents. The Dissertation Research Proposal Defense should be held within one year of passing the Comprehensive Exam and at least one year before the Dissertation Research Defense.

Competencies will be ultimately evaluated at the dissertation defense meeting.. If the matter is still unresolved, the student is referred to the USU General Catalog to follow the procedure outlined there or in article VII of the Code of Policies and Procedures for students at Utah State University.

The School of Graduate Studies at USU is among the top three percent of higher education institutions in the country,. Graduation requires 48-51 credits of post-master's coursework (up to 24 of which can be dissertation credits) and successful defense of a research-based doctoral dissertation.

Releasing the dissertation means submitting it to the University. The electronically published dissertations have to be delivered as a publishable file (PDF) to the University’s Library 15 days before the public defence of the doctoral dissertation. The dissertation is published in the publication archive no later than 10 days before the defence.

F. PhD Dissertation Defense. The dissertation defense consists of a public component followed by a closed component. All members of the department are formally invited to the public component, but it is open to all. The public component lasts 45 minutes, including a question and answer session.
